Drone Categories by Weight (MTOW)
Nepal classifies drones into 4 categories based on Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW).
Category A
< 250g- Registration with CAAN required
- No operator license needed
- Must stay below 400 ft AGL
- Line of sight required
- Cannot fly near airports or sensitive areas
Category B
250g – 2kg- Registration with CAAN required
- Operator training recommended
- Must stay below 400 ft AGL
- Line of sight required
- Permission needed for commercial use
Category C
2kg – 25kg- Mandatory CAAN registration
- Pilot license required
- Security clearance required
- CAAN flight permission for every operation
- Insurance required
Category D
> 25kg- Full CAAN approval process
- Type certification required
