Do You Need a License for DJI Mini in Nepal?

The DJI Mini in Nepal

The DJI Mini 2 and DJI Mini 3 are some of the most popular drones in Nepal, partly because they weigh under 250 grams — placing them in Category A under Nepal's Drone Sambandhi Karyabidhi 2075.

Category A Rules

Under the Karyabidhi 2075, Category A drones (< 250g):

  • Require registration with CAAN
  • Do NOT require an operator license
  • Are the most accessible category for beginners

  • However, registration is required even for the lightest drones.

Rules That Still Apply to DJI Mini

Even with your DJI Mini 2 or Mini 3, you must:

  • āœ… Stay below 400 feet (120m) AGL
  • āœ… Maintain line of sight at all times
  • āœ… Stay at least 5km from airports
  • āœ… Never fly over crowds or public gatherings
  • āœ… Avoid military zones, borders, and heritage sites
  • āœ… Obtain permission for commercial operations

  • What About DJI Mini 4 Pro?

The DJI Mini 4 Pro weighs approximately 249g — still under 250g. The same Category A rules apply.

    Important: Commercial Use Changes Everything

If you're using your DJI Mini for paid work — wedding photography, real estate videos, tourism content — you are conducting commercial operations. This requires:

  • CAAN notification or permission
  • Potentially registering as an operator

  • Bottom Line

For casual, recreational flying in open areas away from restricted zones, a DJI Mini (< 250g / Category A) still requires CAAN registration but no operator license. You are bound by all operational rules.

For commercial use, contact CAAN regardless of drone size.
