Upcoming Drone License System in Nepal — What to Expect

Nepal's Drone License: What's Coming

Nepal currently operates under the Drone Sambandhi Karyabidhi 2075, which provides operational guidelines but lacks a formal pilot certification system. That is expected to change.

Why Nepal Needs a Formal License System

As drone usage grows across Nepal — in mapping, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure inspection, and media — the need for certified, accountable pilots becomes critical.

A formal license system will:

  • Standardize pilot knowledge across the industry
  • Increase safety in Nepal's complex airspace
  • Open professional opportunities for certified pilots
  • Align Nepal with international aviation standards

  • What We Expect: Inspired by FAA & DGCA

Based on CAAN's direction and global aviation trends, Nepal's license system is expected to include:

    Types of Licenses

  • Recreational Certificate — for hobby pilots
  • Commercial License (RPPL) — for professional operators
  • Advanced Operator License — for large/BVLOS operations

  • Expected Exam Format

  • Theory examination: Multiple choice questions (MCQs)
  • Topics covered: Airspace, weather, navigation, regulations, safety
  • Practical assessment: Possibly required for higher categories

  • Expected Syllabus Areas

  • Nepal airspace structure and CAAN regulations
  • Meteorology and weather interpretation
  • Navigation and chart reading
  • UAV systems and maintenance basics
  • Emergency procedures
  • Human factors and crew resource management

  • How to Prepare Now

Even before the official launch, you can start preparing:

  • Study the current Karyabidhi 2075 in depth
  • Learn airspace concepts — classes, altitude, NOTAMs
  • Practice weather reading — METAR, TAF, forecast models
  • Understand navigation — GPS, coordinates, terrain reading
  • Join our training program when it launches

  • Timeline Expectations

While no official date has been announced, the drone industry in Nepal expects formal licensing to be introduced progressively. The sooner you prepare, the better positioned you'll be.
